With the launch of ISR G2, Cisco had joined the band wagon of licensing model. Cisco would be benefitted greatly with this because it wont be possible to get pirated IOS now. Even if you have a copy of the IOS you would need to purchase a license from Cisco… So, NO MORE PIRACY

Lets talk about the new licensing structure from Cisco –

Now taking it further, lets discuss these License types –
IP Base –  This license by default ships with the following features and comes free of cost with every device –
IPV6 parity for IPV4 features present in IPBase. Some of the key feature are AAA BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, ISIS, RIP PBR IGMP, Multicast DHCP HSRP, GLBP NHRP HTTP HQF QoS ACL, NBAR GRE CDP, ARP NTP PPP PPPoA PPPoE RADIUS TACACS SCTP SMDS SNMP STP VLAN DTP IGMP Snooping SPAN WCCP ISDN ADSL over ISDN NAT-Basic X.25, RSVP, NTP, Flexible Netflow etc.
Data License –  This license is would provide you features of advance routing, MPLS and other WAN connectivity types. Find a small list of features below –
MPLS, BFD, RSVP ,L2VPN, L2TPv3 ,Layer 2 Local Switching , Mobile IP, Multicast Authentication,FHRP-GLBP ,IP SLAs, PfR ,DECnet, ALPS, RSRB, BIP, DLSw+, FRAS, Token Ring ,ISL, IPX ,STUN, SNTP, SDLC, QLLC etc.
This is kind of equivalent to SP Services IOS. This license also has a feature license for SNA Switching
Sec License –  You would need this license if you are looking for any security related features. This could be said a replacement for Adv Security IOS earlier. Lets have a look at the features in License –
IKE v1 / IPsec / PKI, IPsec/GRE, Easy VPN w/ DVTI, DMVPN, Static VTI, Firewall, Network Foundation Protection,GETVPN etc.
Apart for this, Cisco too have some subscription based services for which you would need to buy a separate Feature License. List of these Licenses can be found below –
  • SSLVPN (counted)
  • Intrusion Prevention (Subscription)
  • Content Filtering (Subscription)

UC License – Next in the league is the UC License, Remember having a IP Voice IOS and then installing CCME on top of it. Cisco had bundled all that stuff in this license. Lets have a brief look at its features too –
TDM/PSTN Gateway, Video Gateway[H320/324],Voice Conferencing, Codec Transcoding, RSVP Agent (voice), FAX T.37/38, CAC/QOS, Hoot-n-Holler etc.
Apart from these features if you wish to use Gatekeeper Feature, There is a separate license for it and Cisco had also released couple of Right to use Feature Licenses, which are –
  • Land Mobile Radio

  • CME: Voice & Video (counted)

  • SRST: Voice & Video (Counted)

  • VXML/IVR Gateway (Counted)

  • CUBE [IPIP Gateway] (Counted)

I beleive migrating from ISR G1 to ISR G2 platform, Licensing should not be an hinderance for you. For detailed discussion on any feature or License type – Please feel free to leave a comment.
